Regional food for health

Glynwood

New York’s Hudson Valley is home to Glynwood: a center for regional food and farming that looks at our food system in a novel way. With a focus on the Hudson Valley region and locally grown food in favor of large scale industrial agriculture, Glynwood is doing their part in building and fostering professional communities that produce healthy and sustainable food. The regional approach Glynwood uses makes is significantly easier to enact systems change starting at the source:

“Food as Medicine is a daily reality for us at Klaever. We have clients come in with a wide range of issues from allergies to low energy, and we’ve found that by simply optimizing food intake as much as possible we can achieve spectacular results. No extreme measures required.”

All in one health

Klaever Health

The key to better health is making the healthiest choices the most convenient. That’s what Klaever Health in Amsterdam is all about. Whether you’re in the market for some relatively simple fresh cold pressed juice or a full set of lab works and a personal training program, at Klaever they can do all of it, or just some of it. Klaever aims to be your one stop shop towards a healthier life.

Six inspiring concepts putting Food as Medicine into practice.

“We are trying to make healthy food as available as fast food. By this, our goal is to lower the bar for people to choose for healthy and plant-based. We have chosen to produce vegetarian and mostly vegan products for our customers to enjoy.

We believe that plant-based is a better option for people’s health, animal welfare and the environment. It is our goal to inspire people to eat more fresh, natural and plant-based, one automat at a time.”

Making healthy easy

Health Food Wall

Health Food Wall is a refrigerated automat that sells 24/7 healthy and plant-based products like meals, wraps, bowls, snacks and drinks. By using the automat, customers can grab-and-go many vegetarian and vegan options within only a couple of seconds.

As far as food as medicine is concerned the Health Food Wall is entry-level, but with a location at Schiphol International Airport near Amsterdam it’s doing a good job in providing convenient, affordable, and tasty healthy meals to a large audience.

What if the healthy choice was the most attractive choice?

“As part of our work to ensure the Hudson Valley is a region defined by food, where farming thrives, Glynwood creates coalitions to foster professional communities who, together and over time, will advance our shared vision for regional farming and a Hudson Valley food culture. Glynwood believes that within five years we could be facilitating a regional coalition of diverse stakeholders in the healthcare system to work on specific, replicable initiatives that have positive health outcomes as well as foster a regional food system.”

It’s a radical antidote to the glut of ultraprocessed food in large part responsible for the epidemic of food and lifestyle related diseases. The Living Cafe is closely associated with Balanced Living Asia, an urban wellness center which aims to educate guests on a more holistic, evidence based approach to good health and the power of food as medicine.

Power of plants

Le Botaniste

Originally from Gent in Belgium, plant-based organic food & wine bar Le Botaniste has since set up shop in New York City, to no small amount of acclaim. The ‘prescriptions’ at Le Botaniste are some of the best dishes the doctor ever ordered. The strength lies in simplicity and quality plant-based ingredients, artfully arranged into that modern health food staple: the bowl. While the food offerings have proven strong enough to stand the test of time it’s the natural wine selection that gives Le Botaniste a real leg up on the competition. Fermented grape juice may not be exactly what the doctor ordered, but Le Botaniste’s selection is unique enough to pique your curiosity. In moderation, of course.

Good for people and the planet

Farm Spirit

We don’t just need to eat food that’s better for our health. We also need to think about the health of the planet. Lucky for us the same diet that does our body good takes care of the planet as well. Nowhere is that perhaps more evident than at restaurant Farm Spirit in Portland, Oregon. Here plant-based dishes made from hyperlocal ingredients are lifted to new heights, with incredible depths of flavor. The non-alcoholic drink pairings also deserve special mention. When we visited Farm Spirit we saw a hopeful future of dining out, in more ways than one.
