Making healthy easy

“We are trying to make healthy food as available as fast food. By this, our goal is to lower the bar for people to choose for healthy and plant based. We have chosen to produce vegetarian and mostly vegan products for our customers to enjoy.

We believe that plant based is a better option for people’s health, animal welfare and the environment. It is our goal to inspire people to eat more fresh, natural and plant based, one automat at a time.”

New York’s Hudson Valley is home to Glynwood: a center for regional food and farming that looks at our food system in a novel way. With a focus on the Hudson Valley region and locally grown food in favor of large scale industrial agriculture Glynwood is doing their part in building and fostering professional communities that produce healthy and sustainable food. The regional approach Glynwood uses makes is significantly easier to enact systems change starting at the source:

Regional food for health

“As part of our work to ensure the Hudson Valley is a region defined by food, where farming thrives, Glynwood creates coalitions to foster professional communities who, together and over time, will advance our shared vision for regional farming and a Hudson Valley food culture. Glynwood believes that within five years we could be facilitating a regional coalition of diverse stakeholders in the healthcare system to work on specific, replicable initiatives that have positive health outcomes as well as foster a regional food system.”

Five inspiring concepts putting Food as Medicine into practice.

Originally from Gent in Belgium, plant-based organic food & wine bar Le Botaniste has since set up shop in New York City, to no small amount of acclaim. The ‘prescriptions’ at Le Botaniste are some of the best dishes the doctor ever ordered. The strength lies in simplicity and quality plant-based ingredients, artfully arranged into that modern health food staple: the bowl. While the food offerings have proven strong enough to stand the test of time it’s the natural wine selection that gives Le Botaniste a real leg up on the competition. Fermented grape juice may not be exactly what the doctor ordered, but Le Botaniste’s selection is unique enough to pique your curiosity. In moderation, of course.

Diet and exercise have never gone together quite so well as they do at Sportclub Het Eiland and restaurant Warehouse in Antwerp, Belgium. The club itself offers seven different exercise programs, and the integrated restaurant offers sit in or takeaway meals to go with your workout. Registered dieticians ensure each meal is balanced properly and good for your health. Natural protein shakes are sure to satisfy the enthusiasts, while the slightly more casual might look to start their day with a good cup of freshly brewed coffee. The food is made with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and is further proof that healthy choices can be easier and tastier than guilty pleasures. Good food that tastes great, everybody wins right?

“To me, ‘food as medicine’ means that our efforts to prioritize and protect our health begin right on our plate, several times a day. Food is our fuel, when we provide children with whole-food meals, we can help prevent them from developing various health conditions linked to diet and lifestyle. Moreover, food is not only medicine for our bodies, but for our minds, too. Since switching to eating plant-based, my mind is clearer, my energy levels are higher, and I feel proud to eat a diet that also is far more sustainable for the environment.”
