REDUCES THE CHANCE OF CANCER
The results from 96 different scientific (observation) studies have shown that a plant-based diet reduces the risk of getting cancer. In particular, the risk of prostate, breast and colon cancer decreases. Mainly not eating meat and eating a lot of fresh fruit, vegetables and legumes have a positive effect on preventing cancer. The positive effect of an average lower BMI and cholesterol also contributes to prevention.

Several studies, including an extensive study by Oxford Academic, have shown that people lose weight more easily by following a plant-based diet than with an animal diet. In addition, the calorie intake with an animal diet seems to be less on average. And those who eat plant-based, consume less 'fast sugars' and saturated fats every day.

Fibers in vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts and whole grain products have a positive effect on the bacterial balance in the intestines aka the microbiome. A healthy microbiome is beneficial for the immune system, improves the metabolism of fat and glucose in the body and reduces inflammation in the body. A so-called 'Western diet' with a lot of refined sugar and red meat and often too little fruit and vegetables, can actually cause disturbances in healthy gut microorganisms. And that can lead to (chronic) inflammation.

A plant-based diet is (of course) more animal-friendly, but also more sustainable. The recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) shows that a diet without animal products is the best choice if we want to reduce greenhouse gases and reduce biodiversity worldwide. 80% of the total CO2 emissions of total food production come from animal products. If we collectively consume 50% less animal products, this would result in a 40% reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions.

According to a recent Harvard study, a particular molecule called lignan has been found in plant based foods, that helps lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. The molecule is mainly found in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, red wine and coffee and has been shown to have an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect.
